After spending much of the last 5-6 months on this blog, and even longer before that, extensively criticizing Islam, I have decided that now is an appropriate time, to discuss the some elements of the Quran more specifically. Also, given the recent focus from me and from others, on the Presidential primaries in the United States, I thought that today would provide a good opportunity to refreshingly alter the status quo.
I want to spend a bit of time discussing chapter 5, Surah verse 32 of the Quran. This is a verse commonly used to deflect critiques of Islam and links to violence. Before I proceed, the verse, as according to the mainstream English translation on the internet, which can be found here, states;
“Because of that, We decreed upon the Children of Israel that whoever kills a soul unless for a soul or for corruption [done] in the land- it is as if he had slain mankind entirely. And whoever saves one- it is as if he had saved mankind entirely. And our messengers had certainly come to them with clear proofs. Then indeed many of them, [even] after that, throughout the land, were transgressors”.
In a more simplified and left- wing orientated form, the verse states; “that whoever kills a soul… it is as if he had slain mankind entirely”. Thus, this edited verse is often used by many, to paint a portrait of a peace-loving and harmonious Islam. Nonetheless, if one is pursuing the truth, rather than a misleading, yet a more comfortable alternative reality, a closer look is required. Another excerpt from the verse reads “that whoever kills a soul unless for a soul or for corruption [done] in the land- it is as if he had slain mankind entirely”. Oh wait, that’s right. This verse does detail an exception, in terms of who can and can’t be killed, and the subsequent consequences are ‘as if he had slain mankind entirely’. Those who kill for ‘corruption’, or those that kill the corrupt, do not receive the same moral punishment, compared to otherwise circumstances. The question is, what exactly does Islam term to be ‘corrupt’?
It is important to remember, that in Islam, those that disbelieve, are regarded to be guilty of the crime of not believing in Islam. Even the shahada, which in its short form states; “There is no god but Allah. Muhammad is the messenger of God”, reveals the eyes of truth and certainty from which Muslims look at Islam, and the perceived illegitimacy of all other religion and belief systems. Moreover, the spreaders of corruption, or the ‘mischief makers’ (as known in different translations), as referred to in the earlier verse, are non- Muslims. This verse clearly proclaims the importance of murdering those that spread corruption, and in basic terms, the killing of disbelievers.
For those that still continue to profess the peaceful nature of Surah 5 verses 32 and 33, and maintain the placement of their heads 6 feet beneath the sand, I will quote Tafsir writer Umar ibn Kathir (1301-1373), to showcase that concept of jihad, and the calls for the murdering of disbelievers, is nothing new or disparate in comparison to historical norms. In reference to Surah 5 verse 32, Kathir writes; “when a Muslim is killed it is as if the entire humanity is killed. When an infidel is killed it has no relevance. Similarly, when a Believer’s (i.e. Muslim’s) life is saved it is as if the entire humanity is saved. You see, in the Qur’an and in Islam what matters most is the lives of Muslims and not the lives of infidels”.
The commonly used phrase used to deceive non- Muslims about the nature of Islam, as we can all see, is nothing more than a fraudulent, taqiyya- inspired scheme. It is important to place a proper context when looking at Islam, instead of listening to the moral crusading left, who will first cherry pick verses such as Surah 5 32, and then when all else fails, resort to the tried and trusted technique of personal attacks. Islam inherently demands its followers to wage jihad against non- Muslims worldwide, and the sooner this is accepted as a matter of fact, rather than an avoided truth, the sooner the West can be in a better position to respond.
