Reports: Deceased Gunman Identified as 66-Year-Old Illinois Man

James T. Hodgkinson, 66, of Belleville, Illinois, identified by law enforcement officials as the gunman who opened fire on Republican lawmakers at a Virginia baseball field, has died from his injuries, President Donald Trump said Wednesday. “The assailant has now died from his injuries,” Trump said in comments about the shooting. Hodgkinson, reportedly an avid supporter of Sen. Bernie Sanders, was shot and mortally wounded by police before being taken into custody. NBC News reported that there was “political or domestic motivation” behind Hodgkinson’s attack, not international terrorism. But the FBI is investigating it as a “deliberate attack,” CNN reported. … Read More

Opioid Funds Tied to Obamacare Repeal

Senate Republicans are dangling billions of dollars in opioid-fighting funds to try to entice wary moderates to sign onto their Obamacare repeal bill, looking to ink a final compromise. Sen. Shelley Moore Capito, West Virginia Republican, said she is looking for a $45 billion commitment over a 10-year period to make sure addicts in her hard-hit state will be able to get treatment under the Republican health care model, which would phase out Obamacare’s vast expansion of Medicaid coverage for the poor. “It’s absolutely critical to my state. We’ve got huge problems,” said Ms. Capito, whose been outspoken about the prescription painkiller and heroin problem that is devastating the … Read More

Sessions: “Appalling and detestable lie”

Attorney General Jeff Sessions, in dramatic Senate testimony, on Tuesday decried suggestions he colluded with Russian officials during the 2016 campaign as an “appalling and detestable lie” — while staunchly defending his role in the firing of former FBI Director James Comey. “I have never met with or had any conversations with any Russians or any foreign officials concerning any type of interference with any campaign or election,” Sessions told the Senate Intelligence Committee. “I have no knowledge of any such conversations by anyone connected to the Trump campaign.” The attorney general addressed the same Senate panel that … Read More

Dems’ Suit Claims Constitution Means One Thing for Obama, but Another for Trump

The Justice Department filed a court brief Friday in support of its motion to dismiss a partisan group’s lawsuit against President Donald Trump for having been a businessman. In the lawsuit, Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, or CREW, alleges that Trump violates the Foreign Emoluments Clause of the Constitution whenever any entity of the Trump Organization does any business with any foreign agent. The Justice Department argues that, for a variety of reasons, Trump does not. It also argues that the court cannot hear the case regardless, because CREW lacks standing to … Read More

Senate GOP, Dems Agree on New Sanctions on Russia

Senate Republicans and Democrats reached agreement late Monday on a new package of sanctions on Russia amid the firestorm over Russia’s meddling in the presidential election and investigations into Moscow’s possible collusion with members of President Donald Trump’s campaign. Top lawmakers on two committees — Banking and Foreign Relations — announced the deal, which would require a congressional review if a president attempts to ease or end current penalties. The plan also calls for strengthening current sanctions and imposing new ones on corrupt Russian actors, those involved in human rights abuses and those supplying weapons to the government of … Read More
