The Story

Yesterday, a man opened fire during a congressional baseball practice in Alexandria, VA. A senior GOP lawmaker and four others were injured.

What happened?

Republican lawmakers were practicing for Congress’ annual bipartisan charity game when the shooter started firing into the field. He hit House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-LA) in the hip. Scalise is in critical condition. The shooter died of injuries after a gunfight with police.

Why did he do this?

Unclear, but the FBI is investigating. Later in the day, it came out that the shooter had recently posted anti-Trump messages on social media, and that he volunteered for Sen. Bernie Sanders’ (I-VT) presidential campaign last year. Yesterday, Sanders said he was “sickened” by the incident.

For a long time, the US political environment has been tense and divisive. But right now, everyone on Capitol Hill is coming together. President Trump said, “we are strongest when we are unified.” Today, the baseball game will go on as scheduled.

This can’t be good. Yesterday, five Michigan officials were slapped with involuntary manslaughter charges related to the Flint, MI water crisis. Reminder: back in 2014, Flint switched its water source from Detroit to the Flint River in part to save money. Soon, residents noticed that their water looked and smelled funny. And doctors saw higher levels of lead in children’s blood. Lead exposure can lead to long-term developmental issues. The tainted water also caused some residents to get Legionnaires disease. This comes from breathing in droplets of contaminated water, and can be life-threatening. 12 people died from the disease. The state attorney general launched an investigation, charging more than a dozen other officials for their role in the crisis. A few more were just added to that list, since the AG says they didn’t do enough to warn the public about the Legionnaires outbreak. Meanwhile, three years later many Flint residents are still using water filters while the city replaces the pipes.

Obstruction. Special counsel Robert Mueller is now allegedly looking into whether President Trump obstructed justice. ICYMI, for months the FBI and Congress have been investigating whether Trump’s campaign colluded with Russia to interfere in the election. Last month, Trump abruptly fired FBI director James Comey, who had been leading the agency’s investigation. Trump later said he had “this Russia thing” on the mind when he made that call. Comey left behind a paper trail with details of private convos he had with Trump. Including one where Trump allegedly asked Comey to drop the FBI’s investigation into former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn’s connections to Russia. Comey says he made these details public because he hoped they would lead to the appointment of a special counsel to take over the Russia probe. Now we’re here. Mueller reportedly began investigating whether Trump obstructed justice soon after Comey was fired. Now, Mueller has reportedly requested interviews with former and current intelligence officials who may have more info. Team Trump says the leaks of these developments to the press are “outrageous.”

Feelin’ good. Yesterday, the Federal Reserve said the same about the economy, and raised interest rates for the fourth time since the ’08 financial crisis. Unemployment has been dropping for a long time, and the Fed thinks the economy’s going to keep doing a happy dance. For years after the crisis, the Fed kept rates low so that consumers would do economy-boosting things like buy a house or a car. The Fed also padded its balance sheet by snatching up a bunch of bonds to inject money into financial markets. Now, it says the economy no longer needs training wheels. So it’s going to start getting rid of those assets later this year. Look ma, no hands.

Bangladesh. Earlier this week, heavy rain triggered multiple landslides in the southeastern part of the country. At least 140 people have died and homes and roads have been destroyed by mud. Bangladesh is a South Asian country that shares a border with India. It’s in the middle of monsoon season, meaning major storms are typical and can lead to landslides. This latest incident also hit a very hilly area. Meanwhile, this region was also just starting to recover from a recent cyclone that damaged tens of thousands of homes. Rescue workers are still trying to reach more remote areas affected by this week’s landslides, and officials say the death toll could rise.

You might have heard there’s a debate going on about healthcare reform in America. Our No Excuses: Healthcare site breaks it down. This week’s all about the FAQs. Here’s one…

Does the federal government fund abortion procedures that are done through Planned Parenthood?

Not exactly. First, while Planned Parenthood does offer abortion services, it also offers things like birth control, breast exams, and STD screenings. Last year, the nonprofit said that abortion services made up just 3% of the services that it provided. The feds reimburse Planned Parenthood for services it gives to people on Medicaid, just like it does for many other healthcare providers. Meanwhile, there’s this thing called the Hyde Amendment that, in most cases, blocks federal funding for abortion services.
