AZ Mexican-restaurant owners punished for going to MAGA rally get last laugh when Trump steps in

President Trump helped the owners of a Mexican restaurant in Arizona get the last laugh after they were targeted by liberals for supporting him.

The president declared that the food is “GREAT” at Sammy’s Mexican Grill in Catalina in a tweet on Sunday, helping boost support for the eatery after its owners were slammed for attending a Trump rally last month.

Jorge and Betty Rivas came under immediate backlash from the Trump-hating left after they were spotted behind the president during his Phoenix rally, getting harassing phone calls, emails and social media comments.

“Just yesterday I had a few guys say ‘you guys are — you’re racists, you’re evil, you’re the worst of the worst,’” Jorge told KOLD-TV.

Jorge, who is from El Salvador, and Betty, who is from Mexico, are both naturalized citizens and have been supporters of the president from the start.

“We have supported the president pretty much from day one,” Jorge said. “Every single rally he has had in Phoenix she goes or I go or sometimes we both go, this time we decided we both wanted to go.”

“Just because we are Latinos, it doesn’t mean that we have to feel like every other Latino in this country,” the couple shared in a video posted on Facebook in response to the attacks. “We are individuals and we feel that we have the constitutional right to meet and support whoever we want.”

Conservative actor James Woods noted that the backlash by the “Democrat mob” was unfortunately a “common occurrence.”

The couple also appeared on Fox News’ “Fox & Friends” Sunday to talk about the experience.

“People know us quite well in this area. I feel more than anything they know who we are. We are not mean, bad or racist people,” the father-of-three said. “They know what they see posted online is a bunch of crap.”

But all the negative attention was apparently noticed by the president who tweeted a message promoting the restaurant on Sunday.

“The food is GREAT at Sammy’s Mexican Grill in Phoenix, Arizona. Congratulations to Betty & Jorge Rivas on doing such a wonderful job. I will try hard to stop by the next time I am in Phoenix. Support Sammy’s!” Trump wrote.

The restaurant owners are not actually strangers to Trump as he noticed them during one of his rallies in 2016 when they were holding up a sign that read: “Latinos support D. Trump.” Trump called Betty Rivas up to the platform, repeatedly saying how much he loved her and the sign.

A similar wave of backlash hit the couple and their business after that incident, but now – as they did then – the couple has no intentions of hiding their support of the president.

“We fell that is very important for every person to say ‘this is what I stand for’ and in our case we are Republicans we are behind the president,” Rivas told KOLD-TV. “I came to this country for the freedoms and I’m going to stand by it.”

Rivas told “Fox & Friends” on Sunday that the hatred from the president’s critics has actually backfired now as they have seen an increase in business following news of their treatment and after Trump tweeted his more than 73 million followers.

“The first day, a couple of days, it goes down, but like yesterday, we had a very good day. People know that anyone as an American has a right to support whoever they want, they come out and support us in a way that has turned out to be pretty good, thankfully,” he said.

Support for the couple unfolded online where many Twitter users declared they would stand behind them.
